The Open Textbook Initiative began in 2010 with the first UTMOST award, and since then has worked to promote and encourage the use of open access and open source textbooks in undergraduate mathematics courses.

An five member Editorial Board seeks out and evaluates textbooks. Books that meet the established criteria are listed as “Approved.” Any instructor or department committee looking for a book for course adoption can be confident that the approved books are worth serious consideration. All books are free in their PDF versions and modestly priced in their print versions. For the approved books and complete information on open textbooks please consult the Open Textbook Initiative.

This Editorial Board will continue evaluating textbooks as part of the new UTMOST project, but it will also be able to expand its efforts to include work on existing books to expand and improve them.
